Vaginal Opening
Vaginoplasty, or “vaginal plasty,” literally means shaping, molding, and tailoring the vagina. After vaginal delivery, multiple layers of your vagina can become stretched and attenuated, and the vaginal opening can become larger. Vaginoplasty decreases the circumference of the vaginal introitus, creating a tighter, smaller opening.
Dr. Morwood uses a posterior approach to tighten and reconstruct the posterior vaginal wall and may tighten the stretched levator ani muscle. Depending on your anatomy, a perineoplasty may also be performed to reconstruct the perineal body and further decrease the circumference.
What to Expect From Vaginoplasty With Dr. Morwood
Your consultation begins in a relaxed atmosphere where he listens to what you would like to change. After reviewing your medical history, previous deliveries, treatments, medications, and prior surgery in the perineal area, he discusses your anatomy, concerns, and goals. Dr. Morwood also explains what is possible, along with limitations, risks, and complications, so your surgical plan can be tailored to you.
With the common posterior approach, Dr. Morwood removes a section of full-thickness mucosal lining from the posterior vaginal wall, extending toward the perineum in a V-shaped pattern. He then re-approximates and tightens deeper tissues, including the levator ani muscle when it has become stretched. As the repair progresses toward the vaginal introitus, a perineoplasty may reconstruct the perineal body and decrease the circumference of the vaginal opening. An anterior approach may instead address stretched supporting tissues around the urethra.

What Is the Difference Between Vaginoplasty and Labiaplasty?
These procedures address different anatomy. Vaginoplasty reduces or tightens the circumference of the vaginal introitus and can reconstruct deeper tissues, including stretched muscle. Labiaplasty works outside the vaginal opening and is performed to mold, sculpt, and tailor the labia. If you have concerns involving both areas, Dr. Morwood can discuss which procedure or combination of procedures corresponds with your anatomy and goals.
Can Vaginoplasty Improve Sexual Pleasure?
It is important to have realistic expectations. Surgery can reliably and predictably make the circumference of the vaginal opening smaller. However, there is no clear, definitive scientific evidence that decreasing the circumference will improve your sexual pleasure. Sexual pleasure, stimulation, and orgasm are complicated and multifactorial. Arousal, attraction, lubrication, psychological well-being, and body image can all play a role. You should ultimately undergo feminine rejuvenation for yourself rather than to please someone else.
Will Vaginoplasty Affect My Sensation?
Whenever an incision is made through tissue containing sensory nerve fibers, some nerves may be divided, stretched, brushed aside, or otherwise affected. In general, feminine rejuvenation surgery does not lead to decreased sensation or erotic arousal.
Within an incision and resulting scar, however, sensory nerves may not grow back completely or may occasionally become hypersensitive. You could therefore experience numbness or, less commonly, hypersensitivity within the scar. These symptoms usually improve with time.
How Is Surgical Vaginoplasty Different From Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation?
The distinction is about tissue depth. Laser and radiofrequency treatments generally affect superficial layers, such as the vaginal mucosa, inner lining, and skin. Surgical vaginoplasty allows Dr. Morwood to access deeper tissues, including stretched muscle and loose fascia.
